Slough
Slough Refugee Support (SRS) assists refugees and asylum seekers in Slough and surrounding areas to settle with pride and confidence. SRS responds to the needs of those who are destitute and in despair by delivering support and services such as sessions with Immigration advocacy, a job club, English classes, sewing classes, UK citizenship class and raising awareness on health and wellbeing. The charity is run by four part-time staff, supported by 27 volunteers.
SRS received a grant of £8,670.00 to fund the continuation of its ‘Ways into Work’ project. The funding enabled the group to give service users advice on job searching issues, CV and covering letter assistance ultimately helping Refugee and Asylum Seekers find employment. SRS was able to purchase vital IT equipment for the beneficiaries to use for work related and job searching purposes. The grant also covered expenses of the dedicated volunteers who help Slough Refugee Support manage an increasing workload and support beneficiaries.
Mr and Mrs K have been service users for 10 years, they both have multiple health problems, have been homeless and unemployed. With the help of SRS Advisers, the couple were able to obtain travel documents, receive appropriate benefits at times when they have been unemployed and not well enough to work and attain permanent and stable accommodation.
K – Project Coordinator
Volunteering experience at SRS has enabled Mr and Mrs K to improve their English whilst acquiring UK work experience. Mrs K has been a Trustee for a year thereby giving a client’s voice in the decision making at SRS. The family has also been in charge of dealing with the storage of food donated to the organisation. Mr and Mrs K, who are currently considering applying for citizenship, have become settled and active members within the local community.
“You could see in their faces what trauma had been in their lives but there’s hope in a place like the Slough Refugee support. They are very grateful for the funding from BCF. I was moved to tears by all I saw.”
