We awarded £5,000 to Freely Fruity towards their ‘Community Growers’ project.
Freely Fruity was founded in 2020 and are passionate about alleviating the burden on natural resources caused by intensive global farming practices. By growing food locally, they contribute to sustainability and environmental health. Their mission is to plant fruit trees in local communities, providing free access to fresh fruit while reducing their carbon footprint. They aim to create positive change through:
All produce grown on-site is donated to local food banks and charities. They hope to inspire others to adopt sustainable practices and contribute to a healthier, more sustainable future for everyone.
The ‘Community Growers’ project focused around the construction of four community gardens within the Wokingham area to provide fresh, high-quality produce to those who may not otherwise afford it. The project included full training to the custodians of the gardens and regular training events to engage local residents. All produce in the gardens would be donated directly to local food banks, with close collaboration with Share and Woodley Lunch Bunch.
Children at the schools and community centre are now being trained in sustainable growing techniques. By participating, they help provide food to neighbours in financial difficulty, while also integrating into the broader community. Additionally, the trees, bushes, and plants improve air quality and create habitats for wildlife. They have had many requests to visit other schools and community centres to install similar projects.
“My child has come home enthused by the growing techniques they have been taught by the charity in school. They regularly spend time in their Geo-club with other children growing and harvesting produce for food banks. They have become so interested that we now have a small growing plot at home!”
