Wokingham
Home – Start aims to support local families with young children in Wokingham that are going through difficult times to ensure parents become more able and confident and that their children get the best possible start in life. The families the group supports face huge challenges including poverty, isolation, poor housing, mental health problems as well as physical health problems.
A grant of £2,000 was made to support the Home-visiting service which allows volunteers to foster a deeper relationship with families. Their volunteers provide a vital lifeline to the families providing advice and support on a regular basis. The coordinators play a key role in matching the volunteers to the families and then supporting the relationship as it develops
“M has grown in confidence in her own abilities as a Mum to her two young boys, and the confidence to assert herself in her relationship with her husband. She has accessed services such as the Children’s Centre, library, toddler groups and has built up relationships with others in the community. She is hoping to learn to drive, has attended and passed an adult learning course at the library and now works a couple of shifts a week caring for others. Her one to one support through a volunteer has ended, following a discussion with the co-ordinator, as M feels it is no longer required.”
