Helping St Kitts and Nevis Association Slough pivot to support people in lockdown
With over £2,600 from our Vital for Berkshire – Coronavirus Fund, SANAS distributed 860 food parcels and carried out a phone call programme to support individual well-being.
St Kitts and Nevis Association Slough (SANAS) was formed in 1998 and became a registered charity in 2004. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, SANAS organised many events to promote health and wellbeing, family unity, education and cohesion, particularly amongst the local Caribbean community.
As a direct result of COVID-19, SANAS had to stop its regular activities. However, the group was very keen to continue to offer support to its clients, those who were at risk of isolation, or those who fell within the vulnerable category in and around Slough.
From April to December 2020, SANAS packed and distributed 860 food parcels to older and vulnerable people in Britwell, Northborough, Manor Park, Farnham Road, Cippenham, Chalvey, Wexham, Goodman Park, Langley and Slough Town Centre areas, giving families and individuals a little extra help during the pandemic.
Its Wellbeing Team of volunteers also made 680 welfare calls to over 250 people, helping them to combat isolation, improve mental health and wellbeing and raise awareness of risks associated with BAME communities and COVID-19.
SANAS has been working in partnership with, and is part of, the #OneSlough Community Response team, and is very grateful for the donations received from Slough CVS and Berkshire Community Foundation to continue the vital work that it is doing.
Adella Parris, Co-Chair of SANAS, said, “For people that are engaged in the community, we are all very busy and pulling together as one, for the greater good of Slough. COVID-19 has thrown up many challenges and SANAS has certainly had to adapt our ways of working. We are also grateful to our team of volunteers who are working extremely hard to continue the support.”
She added: “COVID-19 will be present in our communities for a little while longer, and we will be continuing to support where we can. Our volunteers are working really hard to keep this happening.”
Between April and June 2020, Berkshire Community Foundation made over £1 million in grants funding to almost 200 community projects across Berkshire, supporting more than 75,000 people across Berkshire.
These were made as part of the Vital for Berkshire – Coronavirus Fund – aiming to help charities and community groups address the urgent issues and needs arising from the first lockdown. Grant applications have now reopened this month (January 2021) to support charities and volunteer groups through the new lockdown.
