Case Study: Thames Hospice

Completing a new building to broaden and improve palliative care for patients

A generous donation of £117,332 provided through staunch corporate supporter Reckitt allowed Thames Hospice to complete its brand new Hospice building, ensuring the charity’s ability to nurture and protect patients for the next 30 years and beyond.

Thames Hospice is a charity that provides expert palliative and end-of-life care for people in East Berkshire and South Buckinghamshire with life-limiting illnesses.

Having had to cancel many fundraising activities due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Thames Hospice were struggling to finish the construction of a new building.

BCF provides Reckitt with expert counsel on how it can maximise its philanthropic contribution locally in Berkshire, where its  global headquarters is based. Through this partnership, a timely contribution of over £117,000 was made to Thames Hospice, allowing the charity to complete the final elements of the build, including the IT system and enabling vital oxygen to be pumped to each new bed.

The brand new Hospice building was opened in October 2020, ensuring that its staff can nurture and protect those in need of palliative care for the next 30 years and beyond. The charity can now double the number of people it is caring for and provide a one-stop shop for all its patients’ care needs. It has:

  • Increased inpatient beds from 17 to 28, across three new wings
  • Doubled the Palliative Care Team
  • Enabled the provision of a Rapid Response service and 24-hour helpline for emergency medical and care advice
  • Allowed additions to its Outpatient and Complementary Therapies, including therapies for symptom control, stress and anxiety in patients or carers
  • Increased Pastoral Support and Bereavement Counselling
  • Enhanced Day Therapy Services from 2 to 5 days a week

Thank you! We simply wouldn’t be in the fortunate position we are now in without the wonderful support from Reckitt and BCF. As Founding Patrons, you have helped us to make our dream a reality and to allow us to be able to double the care we can provide to our community, whether that be at the hospice or at home. Thanks to Reckitt, we can continue to provide essential end of life care to everyone who needs us. You should feel very proud to be a key part of this transformational journey.
